Modern luminaires despite listed status

"PALESTRA SCUOLE COMUNALI", LOCARNO | SPORT AND LEISURE

The new high-bay luminaires installed in the sports hall belonging to Locarno primary school – which is listed as an historic monument – create a unique illuminating effect. The project was planned and carried out by
engineering firm SPED – Studio progettazioni elettriche De Lorenzi SA and was based on the designs of star architect and Ticino native Livio Vacchini. The engineering firm’s partnership with luminaire manufacturer Tulux AG (based in Tuggen) ensured that the luminaires meet modern lighting standards and complement the mood created by the architecture.

Architect Livio Vacchini designed Locarno primary school back in the day. The school is now listed as an historic monument to preserve the site’s architectural features. The primary school is home to an impressive sports hall, in which light plays a central role in the overall architecture. Approximately 50 years after it was built, the engineering firm De Lorenzi found itself working in close cooperation with the Locarno municipal authorities to replace the luminaires (also listed) in the sports hall. Mindful of the need for respect, the teams devised a new concept that would enable the luminaires to meet the requirements for the protection of historical sites. Managing Director Gabriele De Lorenzi cannot help but be drawn to architecture and light. Light is able to frame areas, accentuate ceilings and walls and make even the smallest details shine. For this job, the engineer – who has carried out numerous projects in and around Locarno – deftly combined his creative flair with his technical expertise.

Modernising listed lighting installations requires a host of requirements and norms to be taken into consideration, not least that the shape, visual appearance and character of the existing luminaires all have to be retained. By collaborating with Tulux, Gabriele De Lorenzi was able to find a sustainable solution for the sports hall that complies with the requirements of the listed luminaires. The engineer has been working with Tulux for decades and is very impressed by the company’s professional approach and Swiss quality:

“For me, Tulux AG is a reliable partner whom I can work with on projects from A to Z. Long-term cooperation paired with professional advice and dependable service:
Tulux gives me everything I need to complete lighting projects successfully.”

Long-lasting high-bay luminaires
The building’s owner (the municipality of Locarno), Ticino’s heritage conservation body and Gabriele De Lorenzi indicated the desire for a sustainable luminaire that offers precise light guidance and ideal light output while enhancing the natural light as much as possible. Tulux opted for BEAM spotlights to meet those demands. The shape and visual appearance of the installed luminaires complement the sports hall’s architecture and design, meet all technical requirements and leave a lasting impression among teachers, pupils and visiting teams alike. The gymnasts appreciate the light offered by the high-quality LED luminaires and the option to adjust the lighting as desired.
